Icelandic Yoke Knitted Christmas Sweater: The Calm One

The Owl calls this one the quiet one, which from her is close to affection.

Icelandic Yoke is a deep patterned yoke sitting on a calm speckled body, in undyed natural shades: oatmeal, stone, soft charcoal, the colours sheep already come in. There is no red. There is no gold. There is a large circular band of pattern around the shoulders and then there is nothing else, and that restraint is the whole design.

Our Head of Knitwear brought it in during a week when everyone else was arguing about tinsel. She waited for the argument to finish. Then she put it on the table.

The Owl explains the yoke

The Icelandic lopapeysa is younger than people assume, a mid-twentieth-century idea that became a national uniform inside a generation. The signature is the yoke: a wide ring of pattern radiating out from the neck, worked in the round, with the body left plain or lightly speckled so the shoulders carry everything.

Ours follows that logic. A deep yoke, a calm lice-stitch body, natural undyed shades throughout, and no attempt to brighten it up. The Owl points out that a yoke works because of what is left out, and that everyone who has ever tried to improve one has made it worse.

She was asked whether it might benefit from a snowflake. She put her glasses on to look at whoever asked, and then took them off again, and that was the end of it.

The Ugly Rating: 1 out of 10

The lowest score in the whole range, and the Owl treats it as a personal achievement rather than a criticism.

The Chief Festivity Officer, a capybara, gave it a 1 and then wore it for four days. He has offered no comment. He does not need to. This is the sweater you buy when the invitation says ugly and you have decided, privately, that you are not going to do that.

It also solves a problem the loud designs cannot. Office safe. Fireside ready. Photographs well in poor light, which December is made of. You can wear it to the party, to the in-laws, and to work the following Tuesday, and only one of those is true of a light-up snowman.

What the rest of them made of it

Sitting DuckSitting Duck, Head of Quality Control

Studied the yoke. Studied the join where the yoke meets the body. Found nothing to say and said it. The Owl considers this the strongest review the Duck has ever filed.

Cool CatCool Cat, Head of Morale

Asked, with feeling, where the party was. Was shown the yoke. Asked again. Has described it as “a sweater for people who leave at nine” and has not been persuaded to withdraw the remark.

DeerDeer, Head of Illuminations

Said nothing at all, which is unusual, and was later found holding the sleeve up to a lamp to see how it took the light. He gave it back without comment. We are counting that as approval.

BullBull, Head of Careful Handling

Approved of the natural shades on the grounds that undyed wool ages honestly and does not go strange in the wash, which is the most technical thing the Bull has ever said.

Every form Icelandic Yoke comes as

Five, all knitted rather than printed.

The knitted crew, $149

The full lopapeysa shape. Real jacquard through our custom knit program, two colours per row, deep patterned yoke over a lice-stitch body, ribbing at collar, cuffs and hem. Unisex classic fit, one price at every size, about two weeks on the needles.

Icelandic Yoke Knitted Christmas Sweater, 149.00 US dollars

The knitted vest, $119

Sleeves removed, yoke intact. This is the version the Owl wears herself, over a shirt, in an office she keeps too cold.

Icelandic Yoke Knitted Christmas Vest, 119.00 US dollars

The knitted pet sweater, $75

Same yoke, same natural shades, resized for a dog. It looks unreasonably distinguished on a dog, which was not the plan and has become the main reason people buy it.

Icelandic Yoke Knitted Pet Sweater, 75.00 US dollars

The you-and-your-dog matching set, $199

One for you and one for the dog, $199 together against $224 apart. Two creatures in matching undyed Icelandic wool, one of whom understands the reference.

Icelandic Yoke Matching Set | You + Your Dog, 199.00 US dollars

The couples matching set, $279

Two crews, one yoke, $279 together against $298 apart. Matching without the matching personalities. Order two different sizes, the set expects it.

Wearing the calmest sweater at a loud party

Natural shades go with everything, which is the advantage, and they punish a busy outfit, which is the catch. Plain trousers, plain boots, nothing else patterned. Let the yoke be the only event.

It runs true to size in a unisex classic fit. Between sizes, or after a slouchier look, go up one. The sizing and fit guide has the numbers.

Undyed wool is the most forgiving thing we make. It does not fade oddly, it does not date, and it will still look correct in five years, which no printed snowman can promise.

When can you get it?

Every knit is made to order and ships standard only, so the Christmas deadline lands earlier than people expect.

Order by November 15 for delivery before Christmas, worldwide. That covers the crew, the vest, the pet sweater and both matching sets. There is no express option on knitwear, because the two weeks on the needles happens before anything ships.

After November 15 the knits stay orderable and arrive after Christmas Day. If you are reading this in December, the all-over-print sweatshirts and badge tees run to December 11 in the USA. All the dates are on the shipping and cut-off page.

FAQ

What is an Icelandic yoke sweater?

A lopapeysa: a sweater with a wide circular band of pattern radiating from the neck over the shoulders, worked in the round, with the body left plain or lightly speckled. It became Iceland’s national knitwear in the mid-twentieth century.

Is Icelandic Yoke an ugly Christmas sweater?

No, and we scored it 1 out of 10 to make the point. It is the sweater for a party where you have quietly decided not to participate in the dress code.

Is it knitted or printed?

Knitted. Real jacquard through our custom knit program, two colours per row, made after you order it.

What colours does it come in?

Natural undyed shades: oatmeal, stone and soft charcoal. There is no red and no gold, which is deliberate.

Can I wear it to the office?

That is the main thing it is for. It reads as a good sweater rather than a costume, so it survives the party and the following Tuesday.

When is the last day to order for Christmas?

November 15, worldwide, on every knitted form. Printed items run to December 11 in the USA and November 26 internationally.

The Festive Folks’ Verdict

Buy Icelandic Yoke if you want the one sweater in the range that will still be in your wardrobe when the light-up ones are in a bag in the loft. It scored a 1 and the Owl has never been prouder of anything.

Cool Cat maintains it is a sweater for people who leave at nine. The Owl leaves at nine.
