Christmas Sampler Knitted Christmas Sweater: Every Band We Own

Every motif we own is on this sweater. That was the brief.

The Owl usually spends a season deciding which three bands a design gets and which fourteen it does not. For this one she was asked what would happen if she used all of them, and she went quiet, and then she did it.

Christmas Sampler is pine green and red with cream and gold: trees, snowflakes, hearts, diamonds, crosses, zigzags, the eight-point star, and the speckled field between them. No animals. Just eighteen bands of pure Christmas, stacked from hem to collar.

The Owl explains the excess

There is a real tradition behind this, and the expensive look of it is the tradition working as intended. In hand-knitting a sampler is where you prove you can do everything: one piece, many patterns, no repeats. A sweater carrying six to ten distinct band patterns has always been the premium read, because each new band is a new chart to follow and a new place to get it wrong.

So the density is the point. Eighteen bands, every geometric class in our library appearing at least once, the star stated three times at full scale on a red ground near the shoulders and never repeated at that size again. Pine green does about half the surface, red does a quarter, cream and gold carry the pattern.

The Owl will tell you this is the most technically demanding thing in the range, and then tell you again. She is right, which is the annoying part.

She was asked at the review whether any band could come out. She looked at the list. She said no to all eighteen individually, in order, and it took some time.

The Ugly Rating: 6 out of 10

The Chief Festivity Officer, a capybara, gave it a 6 and described it as the most Christmas that can happen to a person without a battery being involved. He said this from a hot spring and did not elaborate.

Six out of ten means the room knows what you are doing. Green and red at this density is not subtle, and it is still a proper knitted garment rather than a printed novelty, which is the specific gap this one lives in.

Wearing eighteen bands without wearing nineteen

Dark denim or black trousers, plain shoes, and stop. The sweater is the outfit. Adding a Santa hat, a light-up accessory or a second festive item takes it from a well made Christmas knit to a person who has committed, and the two look nothing alike in photographs.

This is a real knitted garment rather than a printed sweatshirt, which is the difference you feel when you lift it out of the box. The pattern goes all the way through. It comes back out next December looking the same as it did this one.

When can you get it?

Every knit is made to order and ships standard only, so the Christmas deadline lands earlier than people expect.

Order by November 15 for delivery before Christmas, worldwide. That is the hard date on every knitted form: the crew, the vest, the pet sweater and the matching sets. There is no express option on knitwear, because the two weeks on the needles happens before anything ships and no carrier can win that time back.

What is a sampler sweater?

A knit that carries many different band patterns rather than repeating one. In hand-knitting a sampler is where you prove the whole vocabulary at once, and a sweater with six to ten distinct bands has always read as the expensive one.

Does it have any animals on it?

No. Christmas Sampler is pure geometry: trees, snowflakes, hearts, diamonds, crosses, zigzags and the eight-point star. If you want an animal band, look at Moose Shetland or Dala Horse.

Is it knitted or printed?

Knitted. Real jacquard through our custom knit program, two colours per row, made after you order it. Hold it to the light and you see stitches, not pixels. That is why it takes about two weeks and why November 15 exists.

Is there a version for two people?

Yes. The couples matching set is two crews in the same pattern at $279, and you order the two sizes separately. There is also the $199 set for you and the dog.

Does the price change by size?

Never. One flat price per form across the whole range, 3XS to 3XL. We do not charge more for a bigger sweater, on the grounds that doing so is rude.

When is the last day to order Christmas Sampler for Christmas?

November 15, worldwide, on every knitted form including both matching sets. Printed items run later, to December 11 in the USA.
